The 2012 Rockabilly Ball

It’s on again for the fourth year! Queen Juanita invites you to another great night of 1950’s style music, dancing and fashion for all rockabilly fans in the Canberra district, on Saturday 15th September 2012, 8pm till late!

Once again it's FREE … yes absolutely no cover charge! Get dressed up in 1950s gear and be in the running for best dressed prizes. Plus we’ll have a fun dance competition during the night for couples who would like to go in it.

The venue is the Queanbeyan Bowling Club in Campbell Street, Queanbeyan, where the big dance floor is already well known to lots of local swingsters, and there’s also good food and bar facilities.

The Back Story

It all started with Queen Juanita playing 1950s style swing, zydeco and rock n roll music at venues around Canberra with Dr Zot, Bigmo Taylor and Mr Murv. Ranging from outdoor gigs at the Botanic Gardens, to Friday nights at the Queanbeyan Bowlo, to Sunday arvo gigs at the Old Canbera Inn or Pangea’s - suddenly great dancers started appearing on the floor.

The more dance songs we did the better the dance floor looked. The band was hooked! We learned more dance tunes, especially various styles from the 1950s – Fats Domino, Hank Williams, Wanda Jackson… great fun to play and great to dance to. Not to mention the ongoing search for the perfect tiki lounge outfits and vintage guitars to get the LOOK to go with the SOUND.

The next thing you know, during the breaks at gigs we were deep in conversation with dedicated dancers …and the idea of a BIG night of 1950s music, fashion, dance and associated cultural accoutrements in the nation’s capital was born. We ran the idea past Billy Arnett at the Folkus Room and he said three words: Yes Yes Yes! The National Rockabilly Ball was GO!
